The origin of holy river Narmada, Amarkantak in Madhya Pradesh, is a unique natural heritage area and is the meeting point of the Vindhya and the Satpura Ranges. People also called it “Teerthraj”, the king of pilgrimages.

There are several stories behind the name of Amarkantak. One of the famous poet Kalidas name this place Amrakoot because of contained lots of mango trees. Later it became to Amarkoot.

The forest which is surrounding of it, is full of rich variety of plants with medical properties. Amarkantak was also a meditation place of famous Indian mystic and poet ‘Kabir’ in 15th century.
